Underground Railroad

Jennings County is rich in Underground Railroad history. Below, row houses located on St. Hwy. 7 in Vernon, housed underground tunnels that led run away slaves to hiding places until they could be safely transported to safe houses in the North. Society volunteers give programs on the Underground Railroad to motor coach tours and other visitors throughout the year.
